The Latest Contact Lens

Is it time for you to switch to the latest contact lenses? Are you starting to have symptoms that are making you uncomfortable in your current lenses? Would you really like to be able to sleep in your lenses? Now’s the time to ask your eye doctor about the latest contact lenses and if they’re right for you. What is the latest contact lens? New designs are being introduced fairly regularly, but probably the most important breakthrough in recent years was the development of silicone hydrogel material. Often called “breathable” or “ultra permeable,” silicone hydrogel lenses allow more oxygen to reach the cornea than traditional hydrogel lenses.

Are silicone hydrogel lenses for everyone? Even though it’s tempting to ask for the latest contact lenses just because they’re new, it’s important to have your eye doctor evaluate your eyes and make a recommendation. Certainly, allowing more oxygen to reach the cornea is a healthy option. And if you want to be able to wear your contact lenses while sleeping, silicone hydrogels are the way to go. Not all silicone hydrogel contact lenses are alike, though. Some are approved for overnight wear for 6 consecutive nights, while others are approved for 30 nights. If your eye doctor clears you for 30-day continuous wear, you’ll soon discover another advantage of the latest contact lenses. You can eliminate the hassle of daily cleaning and disinfecting. You just toss the lenses away after a month.
