Disposable Lenses

Many people who wear contact lenses swear by disposable lenses, but it’s important to understand that there are several definitions of “disposable” when talking about contact lenses. There are daily disposable lenses and there are lenses that can be worn for one, two or four weeks before they are discarded. Here are some of the differences.

Daily disposable lenses, also called one-day lenses, are best known for their convenience. You put them on when you get up in the morning and throw them away before you go to bed. And what could be better for your eyes than a fresh, new lens every day? In fact, many people who now wear daily disposable lenses every day started wearing them only for specific activities, like sports. Or they might have planned to use disposable lenses during allergy season to make sure their lenses were absolutely clean and free from allergens every day and then switch back to their usual lenses after allergy season. Once they experienced the crisp vision and the hassle-free lens care, however, they were hooked.

Another convenient way to wear disposable lenses is called extended wear. Extended wear lenses are made of a special material that’s FDA-approved to wear for up to seven days, even while you’re sleeping. Just wear them for a week and throw them away. And finally, for the ultimate in convenience, there are lenses that are FDA-approved for up to 30 days of continuous wear. Your eye doctor will tell you if disposable lenses are right for you.
